7 Night North Lake Turkana Expedition
Day 1:
Depart Sosian Ranch in the early morning and drive north through the Karisia Hills and Maralal town to the town of Tum where you will camp in a private mission campsite.
Day 2:
Drive north past Ol Donyo Ngiro, the Samburu Sacred Mountain, reaching the edge of Lake Turkana before lunch. Drive up along the lake to Loingalani and after a quick refuel, north to Porr, on the way passing El Molo island which is inhabited by the El Molo people, Kenya’s smallest tribe. Reach camp late afternoon (the camp is set up just north of Porr on the edge of the lake).
Day 3 - 5:
Follow the lake’s edge and drive up to Sibiloi National Park. The terrain changes here, sand dunes and palm forests and Turkana communities are all highlights. At this point there is quite a bit of wildlife, gerenuk, northern grant’s gazelle. Camp for 3 nights in Sibiloi National Park where there are zebra, topi, lion, hyena and leopard as well as wonderful northern bird species and you can walk safely here as there are no elephants or buffalos. There is very good fishing along the edge of the lake, fishing from the shore with lures for Nile Perch (up to 40lb from the shore, Tigerfish and Tilapia) You can also fly fish. Camp for 2 nights on the edge of the lake and one night inland allowing you to explore the interior of the park.
Day 6:
Drive to Loingalani and spend the night at Oasis Lodge, a basic lodge with cottages with views of the lake and cold drinks, a welcome break after three days exploring Sibiloi.
Day 7:
Drive south towards Maralal and spend the night in a cottage near World’s View.
Day 8:
Drive back to Sosian Ranch, arriving before lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing with the chance for an evening walk or a night drive.
We would recommend two nights at Sosian after these expeditions to allow time to relax, enjoy the area and have everything washed and yourselves revived before travelling.
9 Night North and South Lake Turkana Expedition
The itinerary is as above until Day 7 when you drive to the Southern tip of Lake Turkana for 2 nights:
Day 7 - 8:
Drive south along the edge of the lake to Von Hohnel Bay. The southern tip of the lake offers good cultural interaction, birding and fishing for Nile Perch. There are incredible geological sights here, recent lava flows and volcanic cones. Camp on lake shore.
Day 9:
Drive south towards Maralal and spend the night in a cottage near World’s View.
Day 10:
Drive to Sosian Ranch arriving before lunch and spending the afternoon relaxing with the chance for an evening walk or a night drive.
Again we would recommend two nights at Sosian after these expeditions to allow time to relax, enjoy the area and have everything washed and yourselves revived before travelling.
2011 & 2012 Turkana Expedition Rates
Available for groups of 2-7+. The itineraries are flexible and can be tailored to suit individual groups. Available all year except July, August and Dec 15th – Jan 15th.
Flying Option
There is an option to fly out of Loingalani after the night at Oasis Lodge, chartering with Tropic Air to Nanyuki.
Koobi Flora Museum
If you are interested in archaeology and flowers, you can add an extra night to this itinerary to see the Koobi Flora Museum (100km round trip from Sibiloi)
Fishing Safaris
f you are keen on fishing, Sosian will take their own boat and this itinerary can be adapted to focus more on the south of the lake. Please ask for costs and details.
