Morocco : Desert

The majority of southern Morocco is the Western Sahara, this area of desert is relatively unexplored and a self-drive holiday with a four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary if you wish to visit this area properly. However in northern and central Morocco you can visit the desert from either Zagora or Erfoud where accommodation can be arranged in Berber tents, guests houses or hotels and you can visit the dunes from the back of a camel or horse or explore on foot.

Zagora

At the end of the Draa Valley is the small town of Zagora, once inhabited by the French as an administrative post and now it is a large town on the edge of the great Sahara Desert. Although Zagora itself has little to keep you there for more than a few days, it makes a practical starting point to base your trips into the desert. Desert treks are available from just an overnight stay to the ultimate desert excursion of five nights, either with a camel or a four-wheel drive. Zagora does have a number of good hotels and traditional Moroccan restaurants, during your stay here do not miss the underground Kasbah or a climb to the top of Jebel Zagora for the stunning views. However you arrive at Zagora you will pass through the Draa Valley, a long winding river valley scattered with lush green palmeries and busy villages, this area of Morocco is famous for growing dates, figs and olives.

Kasbah Asmaa
Kasbah Asmaa lies to the south of Zagora alongside the river and a palmery. The owners believe in treating their guests to a true authentic Moroccan stay, due to popular demand they have recently doubled the number of rooms. All of the rooms are decorated with a number of carpets (the owner of the hotel having one of Zagora's carpet stalls) and other Moroccan handicrafts. In the warmer months you may prefer to sleep under the stars on the roof terrace or in one of the Berber tents at a beautiful spot near the Draa River. There is a small pool and a beautiful garden with some of Morocco's stunning flowers and palm trees.

The private central area of the hotel has a number of palm trees offering welcome shade from the heat of the day and a pool that is safe for children. All of the 46 rooms are en-suite and decorated in a traditional Moroccan style. Hotel La Fibule has arguably the best Moroccan restaurant in Zagora.

Erfoud

Erfoud is only 50 kilometres north of Merzouga and the nearby Erg Chebbi, the only genuine Saharan dunes in Morocco, this area is a great expanse of ever-changing landscape, with dunes as high as 650 feet. Sunrise and sunset tours can be arranged from Erfoud itself, as can camel treks or you can spend the night out at the base of the dunes in a Berber tent and watch the fascinating changes colours of the sand. Often seasonal lakes appear which attract flocks of flamingos and other water birds, there is also a healthy resident population of desert bird species that can be see at dawn and dusk. Rissani is only a short drive and definitely worth a visit, a small town rich in history and there is a busy souk and camel market three times a week.

However you get to Erfoud, you will be amazed by the surrounding scenery. Arriving from the north, you will pass through the Ziz Valley, one of the most spectacular passes in Morocco; dramatic canyons where the floor is littered with well irrigated villages and swaying palmeries.

Arriving from the southwest, you will either pass through endless desert or along the base of the High Atlas Mountains passing the Dades and Todra Gorges.
