Mozambique : Bazaruto Archipeligo - Benguerra & Bazaruto Island

The Bazaruto Archipelago is in southern Mozambique, just south of Beira and opposite the coastal town of Vilanculos. Boasting idyllic white beaches and warm turquoise seas, it is made up of five sparsely inhabited islands, and is particularly well known for its pristine reefs and the diversity of its marine life which offer world-class diving and fishing. Inland, as well, you'll find wonderful birdlife and the freshwater lakes are home to crocodiles.

Benguerra Lodge

Benguerra Lodge is set on the protected northwest shore of Benguerra Island: The island is only 11 kilometres in length and the forest, savannah and wetlands sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora on this idyllic island getaway, which was declared a National Park in 1971. The lodge, which merges naturally into the surrounding forest, has 10 luxurious casitas, each with its own 100m² private deck, comfortable lounge area, plunge pool and outdoor dining area for romantic starlit dinners, and two intimate cabanas, each with its own private deck and dip pool. All the rooms are only a moment’s walk from the gorgeous white half-moon beach of Benguerra Bay.The lounge, dining room and bar area is separate, with a large airy patio overlooking the beach and sea across the lovely gardens. Naturally the seafood here is delicious, freshly caught fish, calamari and crab are often prepared with a Portuguese recipe. Your days here can be spent doing exactly what you want and when you want to do it. There are a number of activities available from the lodge including scuba diving, snorkelling, game fishing, fly fishing, deep sea fishing, dhow cruises, castaway picnics, beachcombing, bird watching, visits to the freshwater lakes, mainland excursion to Vilanculos, windsurfing, volleyball, horse-riding and sunset cruises. You can choose to do as much, or as little, as you like. Benguerra Lodge is one of the oldest lodges in the area and definitely one of the best on the archipelago and one we highly recommend.

The Villa at Benguerra is an exclusive, private villa, ideal for honeymoon couples and special family occasions. Set away from the rest of the lodge, it offers total privacy and has a personal chef available to prepare all meals and all drinks are included in the price. However you can still eat and drink at the lodge if you wish to and use all the facilities. The Villa is beautifully decorated in East African style and has two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, intimate lounge and dining area with hand carved mahogany table. Outside on the wooden deck is a Jacuzzi/plunge pool for relaxation. The Villa is based on an exclusive-use basis even if there are just two of you staying there.

Marlin Lodge

Marlin Lodge is on Benguerra Island and is built on a stunning white sandy beach fringed by palm trees and encircled by clear waters teeming with diverse marine life.

The lodge is small and intimate and the comfortable en-suite chalets are made from local materials and raised off the ground to limit the damage to the island. Each chalet is on the beach and enables you to enjoy breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. There are 2 types of rooms; 14 spacious luxury chalets are air-conditioned and have inside and outside showers. There are 3 executive suites which are the same layout as the luxury chalets but are just bigger so actually not worth paying the extra, unless you want to host a party! There is a central dining and living area, with a large pool in front. Fresh seafood is a speciality, and here the chefs combine a mouth-watering mixture of African and Asian cuisine.

The lodge provides a number of activities; bird watching, para-sailing, knee boarding, game fishing, snorkelling, catamaran sailing, scuba diving, water skiing and dhow racing to name a few.

Bazaruto Lodge

Bazaruto Lodge is a fantastic beach lodge on the north-eastern tip of Bazaruto island with 40 en-suite A-framed bungalows overlooking the beach. Owned by the Portuguese Pestana group, it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel, which could also be down to Louis, the lodge manager, who actually built the lodge so it has an owner-run feel to it. The deluxe rooms have sea views while the standard rooms are further back, but they are similar otherwise with colourful en-suite bathrooms, and floor-to-ceiling French windows with a veranda. The fishing, diving and snorkelling are all excellent around the islands, and there are lovely walks up to the north of the island. You wont be fussed over here like is some of the smaller lodges but Bazaruto is a lovely lodge which we highly recommend, and it set in such a naturally beautiful area.
