Family-friendly safaris in Kenya

A safari is an amazing family experience and gives you the opportunity to share and explore one of the most exciting eco-systems on earth, learning together about creatures great and small and watching your children’s expressions as they see wildlife in its natural environment for the first time. However, even the most avid mini devotee of the Discovery Channel can find the thrill of bumping around in a Landrover in search of wildlife can soon wear off, and early mornings and late nights are not necessarily the most conducive schedule for little people. So, if you are travelling with a young family, we recommend you stay somewhere that’s flexible with timetables and has a variety of activities to keep all ages stimulated. Kenya’s Laikipia region has wonderful lodges which are excellent for this.

Many of these former ranches are now leaders in conservation and home to plenty of wildlife, but more importantly, offer the opportunity to mountain bike, swim in rivers, ride horses, go on bush walks and tailor your day to your family’s interests. The lodges are often lovely homes full of character and run by the families themselves, making it a very personal experience. Mealtimes and bedtimes fit into children’s normal routine, and a range of activities are tailored to young mind’s interests and attention spans. Tracking animals from their poo might be interspersed with a swim in the river, a game drive with a picnic in the bush, and a bush walk with a visit to a local school or lessons on how the local tribe clean their teeth, treat illnesses with berries or hunt animals, from a tribesman himself. We can discuss the options in detail with you.
