Beach, diving & sailing

Africa’s stunning coastline offers everything from the romance and relaxation of the powder white sand beneath your feet and that perfect warm blue sea, to the adventure and excitement of diving with Africa’s marine life or seeing the dolphins and whales at play as you sail by.

From the luxury and tranquillity of the Seychelles and Mauritius to the vibrant island of Zanzibar, Africa’s coastline is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and an underwater safari waiting for you to enjoy.

The warmth and beauty of the Indian Ocean stretches along Africa’s eastern coast from Kenya’s beach resorts of Lamu and Malindi, down through to Tanzania and its islands of Pemba and Zanzibar. Another must-see is Mozambique’s 2,500 km coast with the Quirimbas and Bazaruto Archipelagos. Here, the Indian Ocean laps the shores of the islands with their spectacular white sandy beaches, dunes, coral reefs and breathtaking marine life.

The Indian Ocean continues around South Africa’s stunning coastline to Cape Point, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean and Africa’s west coast. South Africa offers a great many wonderful beach resorts and lodges, with water sports, sailing, boat trips, fishing, and diving opportunities, or simply relax and watch the famous penguins at play on Boulders Beach.
From the romantic and opulent to a barefoot beach paradise, Africa’s coastline has it all.

  • Leatherback, green, hawksbill, loggerheads and olive ridleys are all types of turtles who nest on Africa’s beaches and always come back to the beach where they were born to mate and lay their eggs.
  • The best time to dive and snorkel with whale sharks is from October to March when the plankton blooms.
  • Humpback and Southern Right whales are best seen between June and October from the Cape up to northern Mozambique and Madagascar.
  • Mangrove forests are essential for stabilising and protecting shorelines and are a unique ecosystem surviving in both fresh and saltwater.
  • The monsoon winds have brought traders from Asia to Africa’s eastern shores for centuries forming the origins of the Swahili culture on the coast.
